Learn Guitar - Online Lessons

Learnguitararticles.blogspot.com - Learn Guitar - Online Lessons- Learning guitar is a highly rewarding and enjoyable musical experience. For some people who are overworked during the day, their guitar lesson is a rare opportunity to relax. But ...let's face it, learning guitar can seem like a daunting task for most of us.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of first learning guitar is that it is seemingly impossible to play anything that actually sounds good.

The traditional way of learning guitar is by taking private lessons from a guitar teacher. Alternatively you could try learning songs by ear and teach yourself by tediously working your way through slow, thick, boring text books. This is a frustrating, time consuming way to learn. Thankfully the invention of the internet has produced a wealth of information and multimedia resources.

The Guitar

The last few decades has seen a remarkable growth in the popularity of rock music and guitar playing has become pretty attractive for many.

Today the guitar is everywhere; a versatile instrument - adapting itself to almost any kind of situation, and ever ready to unite with meretricious gadgetry. Victimized by it's own success, it has become something more than a musical instrument - like the swastika before it, it has become the symbol of a social revolution! The ultimate emblem of grooviness! Like John Wayne's six-gun, Mary Poppin's umbrella or Fred Flintstone's "yabba- dabba-doo", it is now an object unto itself!

Guitar enthusiasts are so often blinded by the symbol that they remain deaf to the world of musical wonders that lie beyond their blinkered six-string field of interest.

Many teenagers exist who aspire to become rock superstars, but there is also a section who wants to learn guitar playing just for sake of it. But many of them end up losing hope of learning guitar since they don't find the best way to learn guitar.

You can accelerate the learning when you start to learn easy guitar tunes and find it a lot easier to pick up learning guitar. The entire purpose behind easy to learn guitar tunes is that they focus on the basics of learning guitar which ensures that not only are you having fun learning your guitar tunes but you are also building your core guitar skills at the same time.

Musician or guitarist?

The majority of newbie players often confuse playing the guitar with being a musician.
Here's an important distinction: playing the guitar is simply a matter of learning certain skills, in fact to learn to play the guitar, the player need only to master 19 moves - that's it, the guitar is very finite project, like fixing a tire.

Just about anyone could learn these simple motor skills, however it would not automatically mean they would know anything about music.Music on the other hand is an infinite subject, it is possible to
study music and use the guitar as a means of expression, however just because a person owns a guitar does not mean that they automatically become musicians.

If you wish to play the guitar like a professional and have plenty of time and money, private lessons are the best way to learn guitar. But, fair warning: teachers only come in two sizes, king-size good and king-size bad.

Music or entertainment?

Today the "eye' has replaced the "ear" as the musical antenna.
Many young guitarists (and a lot of older players too) confuse the term music with entertainment. The fantasy world of rock videos and merchandising is a long way distant from the realities of the serious music student.

If you are guitar newbie and just started to learn guitar, online video guitar lesson is the one you should consider. Online video guitar lessons are specially created for people who are interested in learning to play the guitar with little or no effort because all of the needed tools and information are there with just one click.

The online video guitar lesson is one of the options available in today's modern world for those interested in learning guitar without the pressure to learn. It's not "old school," or even "new school" guitar lessons -- it's "cool school" and by
discovering online lessons, you get to be a part of it. Learning the guitar online is now one of the most effective ways to improve your guitar playing no matter what level you are at.Learning guitar is a duel edged experience giving students the opportunity to hone their organizational, social interaction skills. Learning guitar is about going through a series of stages. Speed develops naturally as a by-product of accuracy.

Unlike the old ways of learning guitar music, online lessons lets you have all of the fun of learning how to play the guitar, without any of the old-fashioned frustration.Online guitar lessons can be useful and convenient, however I would recommend getting at least some face-to-face tuition, as a personal teacher can spot (and correct) flaws in your technique that would otherwise go unchecked.

Again, be aware it's just as frustrating online trying to learn from eBooks, software, or cheap introductory videos with little useful content. What you're really looking for is high- quality, step-by-step video instruction that takes you from beginner (or intermediate) all the way through advanced instruction.Mike Hayes is a teacher, author, speaker and consultant. Important Learning Tips That You Must Follow While Learning Guitar

Important Learning Tips That You Must Follow While Learning Guitar

Learnguitararticles.blogspot.com - Guitar has always been viewed as a musical instrument associated with glitz, glamor and an instrument to impress girls or to show off on stage by many. And they believe that it is pretty easy to play this instrument, and their favorite guitar icons are belting out the fast solos without doing any kind of practice, and they think that it is only their talent that makes them play effortlessly. There is no denying that talent obviously has a role to play in one's ability to master an art or skill, but little do they know that it is their unfailing determination; boundless amount of hard work and their undying passion to learn and practice the instrument that has helped them scale greater heights as guitar players.

The Misconception

This wrong notion about guitar in your minds can play havoc on your dreams when you finally start learning it and can also land you in utter disappointment and despair when you cannot play it as you expected within a short span of time. Then the most imminent thing happens - you give up learning guitar altogether! And the hard earned money that you have spent on buying an expensive guitar and the amplifier will go with the wind! So it is very important to stay well informed of the ground realities and how you must go about learning this beautiful instrument called guitar before you lay your hands on one.

This article gives you some valuable tips on how to go about learning it.

The Truth

With all glitz and glamor aside, learning guitar is just like learning any other musical instrument or art or skill that requires an awful lot of hard work, step by step learning approach, lot of discipline, diligence and the right kind of learning to attain a certain level of success as a guitar player. If you have ever thought that playing guitar is a naturally acquired talent or a walk in the park, then better change that right now!

Learning tips that you must embrace

There are some core guitar learning tips that you must follow in order to turn your dreams into reality! And here are a few of them.

What kind of guitar must I go for?

Are you a serious guitar learner or just a hobbyist who just want to learn couple of chords and play it for fun for your bed room walls? You must first decide what you want to do with your guitar before you buy an expensive guitar, amplifier and/or effects pedal for yourself. If playing guitar is just a pastime hobby for you, then an inexpensive acoustic guitar is enough. Start practicing it for few months and get a feel of it, see whether you enjoy playing it and love spending more time exploring it, check whether your interest is gaining traction during that period. If so, then you can buy a basic electric guitar and an amplifier. This is more than enough for a hobbyist.

And if you are a serious guitar learner who wants to make it big in the music world, then you must definitely approach it with all the professionalism, discipline and dedication. But it is still better to start off with a basic kit of guitar and amps initially, until you have the need for an expensive kit. Again it all depends on your budget, if you can afford, why not buy the gear of your choice?

Where and how should I begin learning guitar?

Well, many of you might go straight over to YouTube.com in the quest for finding some free video lessons to get yourself off the ground. But if you are an absolute beginner, I wouldn't ever recommend that method. It can only help you get overwhelmed than getting your basics clear, in step by step manner. But you must definitely milk this avenue to the fullest if you are an intermediate or advanced level player, it is a massive repository of lessons/songs and ideas that you must utilize.

To attain a high level of success as a guitar player, it is very essential that you learn it in a logical fashion, first starting with the basic stuff, then the intermediate and finally notch up to the much advanced level concepts.

The best logical approach to learning guitar would be as follows.

- Knowing the guitar

- Scales

- Chords

- Advanced concepts

Music theory plays an integral part in grooming you into a highly successful guitar player, so it's very important that you learn music theory from the day one. It will not only help you become a terrific guitar player, but also a highly versatile, flexible and well-rounded musician. Music theory will save you a lot especially when you are playing with other musicians in a band.

What are the best ways to improve guitar speed, versatility and skills?

It's every aspiring guitar player's dream to play fast solos, quick chord changes or progressions and melodious licks on their guitar. In order to accomplish this dream you just need to follow these steps.

Objective oriented practice sessions - Each practice session, no matter how long or short it may be, should be geared towards accomplishing a definitive goal or objective. It may be an effort to perfect a solo, a speed building exercise or an exercise to strum and master certain chord shapes. Whatever the task is, it should be result oriented. You must utilize your practice time fruitfully without fooling around.

Practicing scales - This is your first step towards playing fast licks and solos on guitar. Take any scale and practice it slowly, if possible with a metronome. A Metronome can greatly improve your timing and perfection. Never be impatient to play it faster, it takes time to build up your muscle memory, so be patient and stay consistent and try to devote at least 1 or 2 hours daily, just to practice the scales up and down across the fret board. This is also great way to improve your finger strength and dexterity.

You can take this skill to a step higher and try playing the scales by utilizing the entire fret board. This can help you come out of the rut of getting locked on to a single position on the fret board. This skill will be highly beneficial when you are trying to create your own solos.

If you are unable to squeeze out 1 or 2 hours daily, a practice session of just half an hour can be highly rewarding, but the higher the better. Also make sure that you don't go out of touch for days. Regularity is the key!

Practicing chords - Chords are also as important as scales, and they are the backbone of any musical composition. So as a guitar player you must be well versed with this skill. You must be able to play different chord shapes and change them quickly on the fret board. And this needs a lot of practice.

The best way to practice chords is by practicing a 12 bar blues progression on different keys (or scales)

You will surely get sore finger tips and achy shoulders after you start practicing for the first time, you should not push yourself harder, just take a break for a day or two and continue, but never give up, and in few days you will notice that your fingertips have grown thicker to help you slide and bend the strings effortlessly and your shoulders attuned to the new body requirement. In course of time your fingers will develop strength and dexterity for playing guitar easily.

Listening and replicating - Listening to a lot of solos and licks by other guitarists, especially the pros, and trying to replicate them on your own are very essential in developing your creativity, versatility and skills on the instrument. You will learn a great deal of new techniques and patterns by doing this on a regular basis. You will also hone your skills of learning by ear. YouTube is a great resource for this.

If you want to learn a new fast solo or quick chord change pattern, practice it slowly until you gain speed naturally - you must give enough time for yourself to gain muscle memory for your fingers (on both the hands) to be able to pick the strings and run your fingers naturally over the fret board. Never be impatient to play it as fast and perfect as soon as you start practicing it, you will surely accomplish it slowly and steadily if you are patient and consistent.

Who are some of the best guitar players in the world that I can learn from?

Some of the best players that you can set as your role models are Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Eric Clapton and B.B. King. Of course there are many other great guitar players out there, but I would highly recommend these absolute virtuosos in every sense, that I have listed above. Go to YouTube.com and search for their videos and try reproducing them on your instrument. Believe me; you will learn a lot of new and exciting stuff from them.

Who are the best guitar tutors on YouTube?

One of the best guitar tutors that I highly admire on YouTube is Marty Schwartz, he has an incredible skill of breaking down difficult stuff into easy to consume chunks. Justin Sandercoe is also another highly talented online guitar tutor.

The 5 pillars of learning guitar are patience, determination, regularity, hard work and the urge to explore. If you have these 5 qualities, you will conquer unimaginable heights as a guitar player and musician.

Learn Guitar - Practicing Hallo guys? Are looking for to LEARN GUITAR? Learn to play guitar? Blog on how to play the guitar, I will share the experience of how Learn Guitar effective and efficient. Practicing

Here are a few notes about how to approach practicing with the best frame of mind. First, don’t hurt yourself, especially when you’re just starting. You may be 100% motivated to learn, but you won’t learn anything if you damage your hand from overplaying. It’s easy to do that when you start, because your hands simply haven’t built
up the muscles they need to play yet. This is more of a problem with acoustic steel string guitarists than electric guitarists, because steel string guitars are generally harder to play. Give it a little time; the hand strength will come.

You’ll want to get some essential tools besides the guitar. Get a metronome, and a journal. The metronome helps you play in time, but does more than just that. It forces you to play music, and not rambling notes and chords. Keeping time with the metronome makes you push yourself beyond your comfort zone, so you can grow as a player. You say you’re not a writer. That’s okay, but get a journal anyway, and use it to write down how well you think you’re doing. You don’t need to write in it every day. But when you’ve spent three weeks working on a song or scale or arpeggio exercise, write down how it felt to complete it. Also, write down the things you can’t yet do. A year from now, you’ll look at what you wrote, and feel great pride at how far you’ve come.

Good attitude is crucial to your sense of achievement. Putting yourself down because you can’t yet make a particular chord shape is not nearly as helpful to you as moving on to another chord shape, or reviewing the chords you do know. The technique will come, trust me. Stay motivated by writing your goals down, and rewriting them regularly. Read how others grew from having no skill, to being players.

Play for others, maybe a little before you believe you’re ready. Smooth your playing on a song or two, and play them for someone. You’ll get a whole new perspective on your playing, and what you need to work on. Besides that, any compliments you get will motivate you in a powerful way.

Finger Positions For Guitar

Body Posture and Finger Positions For Guitar

Be comfortable, avoid back problems and get a great sound, all my learning how to sit and where 'exactly' to put your finger!. It is important to get into the habit of getting your body and finger positions right, which will help you play well. In this lesson we will talk about good posture and correct placement of your fretting fingers, which is REALLY important for beginners.

Extra Info on Posture

Classical vs Rock posture
If you want to play classical guitar, then use the classical posture (put the guitar on the same leg as your fretting hand). If not then play the ‘normal' way and place it on the same leg as your strumming hand. For right-handed players this means placing your guitar on your right leg.

This will give you a better posture for playing and I think it looks kind of strange when people play rock or pop with the classical posture. It just looks weird! That said, there are some amazing guitarists who play this way.

Raising the right leg (and crossing your legs)
I find it easier to keep an electric guitar cosy and tight if I lift my right leg a little. That usually means lifting my right knee a bit by putting my toes on the floor instead of the heel, sometimes with the heel resting on the chair leg. I'm not saying that you should, or have to do this, but sometimes I do, and there were a few questions about it on the forum.

The other alternative that achieves the same thing is to cross your right leg over your left. This kind of makes a little ‘V' shape at your hip which helps hold the guitar securely; I like sitting like this, too!

Strap placement and standing up
Set your strap so that the guitar is roughly in the same place when you stand as when you sit. This will make it a lot easier to play, unless you want to play with the strap low, and plan to always practise standing up (which is not recommended!).

Keeping the neck still
Make sure that your fretting hand is not supporting the guitar neck at all and that the neck is stable when you are playing. The last thing you want is the neck wobbling about when you are trying to practise getting your fingers in the right position.

Using a mirror
If you have a bit of a belly, or find yourself straining your neck to see the fingerboard, you might consider using a mirror. I used my dad's shaving mirror when I first practised pretty much all of the time, so I could check the position of my fretting hand, but having a big mirror so you can see both hands and your posture is ideal.

Relax your shoulders
Many people develop tension in their shoulders when they play, especially when doing difficult things. Stay relaxed and you will make it easier for yourself. Imagine that your fretting hand is nailed to the neck and then just let the whole shoulder and elbow relax. It will help your fingers stretch as well: you will always get a better reach when you are relaxed.

Fretting Finger Position
Making sure that you understand why it is important to put your fingers just behind the fret is vital – if you know why, you are more likely to do it the right way. You need to play as close to the frets as you can (without actually touching the fret). This means that you don't have to press down too hard and your fingers will hurt less (although all beginners get sore fingers – this is normal – don't worry about it!).

Pressing too hard will also make some notes go sharp, which will make your chords sound horrible, so really watch out for that.

Try pressing as lightly as you can near the fret while still getting a good, clear note. Then move your finger away from the fret, and notice how much more pressure you need to apply to get a good sound. As a beginner, you want to position your finger where you can get a good sound with the least pressure, which is next to the fret.

You can see this exercise on the video. Do this exercise! Please. REALLY IMPORTANT!!

Thumb placement
Try and keep the thumb positioned behind the neck when you start. Later on you will probably bring it over to play particular chords, bass notes and all sorts of other tricks, but as a beginner, keep it behind the neck and it will help develop the muscles that you will need to play barre chords.

£10 music stand vs £1000 chiropractor bill...
Having your sheet music or book sitting next to you on the bed or sofa and twisting around to see it is a sure-fire way to give yourself neck and back problems later in life, and I can assure you that the small investment of a music stand is well worth it. You don't need a fancy one; just the basic fold-up type is fine. (If you've got excess cash to blow, check out RAT stands, they are super cool lookin').

Keep the nails short on your fretting hand
I already mentioned this, but you should make sure that you keep your nails nice and short, or the nail will dig into the wood of the fingerboard and make your fingers lie too flat. You should use the tips of your fingers to play the notes when you start. Later you might start to use them a little flatter, but learn to use the tips first.

Questions from the forum I think will help you too!

I started playing classical-style with the guitar on the left leg. I think I should switch but it's hard. Help!
If you started playing with a ‘classical' posture then your hands will be used to playing that way and making the switch will feel difficult, but not for long. As with most things, when you try something new it usually takes a little getting used to, and this is no exception. You should find that after a few weeks of playing it will feel better and you'll probably have a hard time going back to the old way.

That said, some people simply prefer playing with the classical posture, and that is fine too.

How does one go about holding top-heavy guitars?
Top heavy guitars (where the headstock is heavy and the neck pulls toward the ground) can be a pain. My Gibson Les Paul Gold Top is really top heavy and the only thing I have found to help is to use a strap and stand up. I don't practise a lot with Les Pauls for this reason, but I know other people who love the feel of them, so it's just a preference I guess.

When I place all four fingers on the fretboard, my index finger tilts inward towards/away from my other fingers. Is this bad?
Everybody's hands are a little different, don't worry about it! There are some guitar freaks out there that seem to have ‘guitar-shaped' hands with perfectly even finger lengths, that seem to be able to stretch to grab any chord with ease, but that's not the case for most players. I have a tiny little finger, but I don't find many chord grips I can't play... I've seen dudes with HUGE ‘farmer's fingers' that can still play intricate jazz grips and little kids playing amazingly difficult stretches with tiny hands... it just takes practice!

How exactly should the tip of the finger be positioned on the string? How near or far from the nail must the string be?

The problem is that this changes depending on what you are playing.

As a beginner, you probably should be aiming to press the string at blue arrow; as you progress, you'll move a little bit more towards the yellow arrow (or past it) because you'll use the tip of the finger to mute other strings. DO NOT try this if you are a beginner, it'll screw up your technique!. If your finger is pressing the string at the red arrow it will hurt, and is not recommended!

My hand touches the neck just next to the high E string. Is this a really bad habit?
As a beginner, yes, you should avoid this. You will probably find that your hand will often mute the thin E string, and also hinder your chord change speed. Later on, you might find that it's O.K. to have the hand gripping there, but you are better off not learning that way. This is one of those things that will change as you develop your guitar playing, but you can't start like that.

You may also find that yoru hand is supporting the neck, which is bad as well.

Guitar Practice Time Per Day

Top 10 Guitar Practice Time Per Day - LEARN GUITAR

We're all busy and time is the most precious thing in the world, so don't waste it! Make every minute count and give it all you got for the most reward!

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your practice time. These are pretty important and will help you enjoy your time with your guitar, if you heed these tips, you will learn better and faster!

Guitar Practice Time Per Day

Included in this list are some things that may not be very useful for a beginner, but try to remember them for later. These are the Ten Commandments of practice! They are explained in greater detail on the video.

Giving these simple ideas a bit of thought and then trying to stick to them will *really* make a difference to how fast you learn to play!!

1. Practice what you can't do, not what you can.
2. Never practice making a mistake. Get it right.
3. Start slowly and get it right before you speed up.
4. Using a timer saves time.
5. Focus on one element of practice at a time.
6. Try and practice a little every day, rather than practising a lot all on one day..
7. Keep track of your practice: use a practice schedule..
8. If it sounds good, it is good!
9. Playing and Practicing are very different, don't confuse them.
10. The more you think, the more you stink! Practice until it becomes instinctive.

A Common Question...
If I have more time than your suggested routines, what extra things should I practice?
The best thing to do would be to have a 10-minute break to let your head clear and then do the whole thing again!

More Tips...
Keep your enjoyment levels at maximum:
Make sure you leave some time for fun in there too. Too much regimented practice and no fun could well make you lose interest. So, make sure you leave some time to jam around and play about – let your new skills grow your own way!

Ideally, you would spend half the time you have to practise working on specific exercises and then that same amount of time again just playing around, noodling, experimenting and enjoying the new sounds you are making.

Motivation:
Remember that ticking boxes in a practice routine can be one of the best motivators you will find. You will be able to keep tabs on exactly how much work you are doing and make sure you are working on the right skills.

Guitar Anatomy

The neck is connected to the body... The tuners are connected to the headstock... The pick-ups connected to the output socket... and hear the word of the Clapton.

The anatomy of the guitar is pretty simple, many of the names are like the human body! This should fill you in on all that, so that you know what I am talking about in my lessons!

Common Guitar Anatomical terms...
These are some of the terms you will see when people talk about guitars. I will try and add to this over time to have a complete list of guitar "bits" :)

Body
The main part of the guitar, where you'll find the bridge, and on electric guitars, the volume and tone controls. This is easy to remember: the body is the bit that is in contact with your body!

Fingerboard
The part of the guitar where you place your fingers to play; the flatter side of the neck.

Neck
The bit that pokes out of the body, which the strings run along.

Headstock
The bit at the end of the neck where the strings stop and we find the tuners.

Position Markers
The dots on the fretboard are a handy indicator of the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th frets. The 12th fret has two dots; then the pattern repeats.

Fretwires
The small strips of metal that go across the fingerboard.

Frets
Actually means the spaces in between the fretwires. However when people talk about ‘frets' – as in, “place your fingers near the frets” – they are actually referring to the fretwires. This seems to be in such common use that on this site we'll stick with ‘frets' to mean the fretwire.

Pick-up (s)
A pickup is found under the strings of an electric guitar, and ‘picks up' the sound. They contain magnets, and measure the changes of the magnetic field made by the moving strings. They come in two basic types: single coil (as found on most Fender guitars) and humbucker (found on most Gibson guitars). humbuckers have a fatter sound, and create less hum (hence the name).

Pick-up Selector
Most electric guitars have more than one pickup, and the selector will allow you to choose which is being used. You can often choose to use more than one at a time. Fender Stratocasters have three pickups, but have a five-way switch. Gibson Les Pauls have two pickups and a three-way switch.

Input Jack Socket
This is where you will plug your guitar in if you use an amplifier. Make sure the cable is pushed all the way in or it will make a lot of noise!

Strap Pin
This is thing that your guitar strap fits on. I seriously recommend getting some kind of strap lock for this!
(see lesson BC-103)

Bridge
The far end of the strings from the nut, on the body of the guitar, usually metal. This is where the ‘ball' will sit when you change your strings (see lessonES-110 and ES-111).

Volume Knob(s)
Pretty obvious really: these control the volume of the electric signal of your guitar. If you've got more than one pickup, you'll usually have more than one volume knob (this is more often the case with Gibson-type guitars rather than Fenders)

Tone Knob(s)
Most guitars have one or two tone controls. These control the amount of bass (low) and treble (high) sounds that the guitar makes. Take some time to play a chord and move the tone knob so you know what it does, because you really have to hear it to understand!

Scratch Plate
Scratch plates have a couple of functions. On acoustics they are there to protect the body and on electrics they hold all the electronics in place and protect the wood.

Whammy' Bar
This is a metal bar that comes out of the bridge in some instruments and by pushing it down will lower the pitch of the notes being played. They can make your guitar go out of tune, and in my opinion are not a very useful attribute on a beginner's guitar, but they are a lot of fun and can be very expressive once you know what you are doing!

Tuners
The things that you turn to change the pitch of the strings. Usually found on the headstock.

Nut
A bone or plastic (sometimes metal) piece at the end of the fingerboard near the headstock.

String Tree
Some guitars have a small 'tree' that the strings run under in between the nut and the tuning pegs, to keep the strings from jumping out of the nut. This isn't needed on most guitars.

Floating tremolo
A type of bridge system whammy bar that locks the strings so that they don't go out of tune, a common problem when you use a whammy bar on a regular guitar. They are great if you are doing serious whammy bar tricks, like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani, but for the beginner they are usually a complete nightmare. None of my guitars have them because I don't play that style much, and my Jeff Beck Stratocaster is pretty good at staying in tune with a normal Fender bridge!

Acoustic Guitar

Most of the terms on this page apply to both electric and acoustic guitars. Here are a few which are specific to acoustics:

Sound Hole
This is where the sound of the guitar will come out after it has bounced around inside! When you strum you don't want to cover this too much if you can help it.!

Rose
This is just decoration around the Sound Hole.

String Peg
A string peg is a plastic (or sometimes metal) pin that holds the string in the bridge. Make sure these are pressed in firmly because there is a lot of pressure on them and they can be dangerous if they spring out. Read the lesson on Changing Acoustic Strings (lesson ES-111) carefully before playing with these!

What guitar accessories do you need?

So you found your perfect guitar, but you will need a few other bits too... There are some guitar accessories that you are definitely going to need quite soon, and some optional things that simply make your life a little easier. In this lesson I want to give you a little bit of advice regarding all these things. It is recommended that you sort these out at some point but you don't need to get them all before you start—all you really need is a guitar and some picks.

Essential Shopping List

There are some things that are pretty much essential that you want to get before you think about starting out on the course, whether you're playing electric or acoustic.

Picks
You will need to buy a few picks. To start with you will need a few very thin picks (get as thin as you can find). These thin picks will help you learn to strum well. It is also worth getting a couple of Medium thickness too - these are better for playing notes individually (like when you play scales).

We also sell justinguitar branded picks on the justinguitarstore :)

Justin Recommends Very Thin Dunlop Guitar Pick
Justin Recommends: Very thin Dunlop Nylon, white or light grey

This set gets you the range of the Dunlop Nylons so you can try out the thicker ones too as you progress! The best for beginner is the white or light grey (I still use these when I'm strumming acoustic too)

Tuner
It is essential to get your guitar in tune! You should learn to tune up yourself, without needing a tuner, but when you are starting out, it is better to be in tune - and having your guitar sound nice - than trying to learn how to tune, messing it up, and having your guitar sound horrible. Have mercy on those that will listen to you learning and buy yourself a tuner right away!

As well as these physical options below, I have to admit that more and more I am using the Peterson iPhone app called iStrobosoft, I've always got it with me, the display is better than any other tuner I have seen and it's super cheap, so if you use an iPhone or iPod touch, I'd go with that!

Justin Recommends Korg AW2G Guitar Tuner

Justin Recommends: D'Addario NS Micro Clip-On Tuner

I love these little clip ons and have a bunch permanenetly attached to a few guitars. They're not as accurate as the Peterson, but cost way less and are small and have a great battery life and perfectly fine for a beginner.

Only about a third of the price of the Peterson, but very good clip on tuner. I used this clip on before Peterson bought one out and it worked fine. Not quite as well made but at this price it's awesome!

This is not a cheap tuner, but it is really accurate. If you don't fancy shelling out this much for a tuner, check out the options above! Peterson make great tuners generally and for the last 10 years have used their stuff, the battery life I find a bit poor, it often turns itself on in the gig bag and I tend to use either the Peterson StroboStomp pedal (over the top choice for a beginner!) or the iPhone app.

Spare strings
Don't make the mistake of not having spare strings. Order some next time you buy some other stuff, and have at least two spare sets at home. There are vids on String Changing if you need to learn to change them.

What gauge strings I hear you ask? Most beginners play 009 gauge for electric and 010 gauge for acoustics. The thicker the strings the more they hurt your fingers, but they sound better. Although "treated" Extra Life strings are a little more expensive, they don't rust and are better for people who don't change their strings very often; they keep sounding better for longer and are less likely to break!

I recently moved to D'Addario Strings because I really liked the NYXL electric and they are much more fun to work with and really get what I'm doing and want to support the site. I've played many brands over the years and you might like to try a few brands out but D'Addario are a good place to start, and they're good people which means something to me too!

Justin Recommends: (ELECTRIC) D'Addario EXP110 Electric Guitar Strings 10-46

These are coated strings, so a little more expensive than regular ones but they last WAY longer. The coating slows down the corrosion so if you're not going to change often these are the best value even if they seem expensive to start. "10 gauage" is good for beginners on electric without being too light but you could try "9's" which are thinner, but I'd not recommend getting any thicker!

Buy at the justinguitar store!

Justin Recommends: (ACOUSTIC) D'Addario EXP26 Acoustic Guitar Strings 11-52

These are coated strings, so a little more expensive than regular ones but they last WAY longer. The coating slows down the corrosion so if you're not going to change often these are the best value even if they seem expensive to start. "11 gauage" is good for acoustic beginners without being too light but you could try thicker or thinner if you like!

Buy at the justinguitar store!

ustin Recommends: (CLASSICAL) D'Addario Pro Arte Classical Guitar EJ45 Strings

These are solid and reliable nylon strings, with a long life and are very popular all rounder classic strings. If you do have a classical guitar, please don't attempt to put steel strings on it as you will most likely damage you guitar and possibly hurt yourself when the bridge pulls off and hits you in the face!

Buy at the justinguitar store!

 Strap
Getting a strap is a very good idea. It helps keep the guitar stable and trains you up for when you want to go unleash your skills on the world. Don't worry too much about what type to get - just one that you like. If you bought a heavy guitar (like a Gibson Les Paul) you might want to get a padded strap so you don't hurt your shoulder!

Justin Recommends: Any Strap!

 trap Locks
If you plan to stand up and use a strap on your guitar, then please buy some strap locks. These can range from plastic discs that cost very little, to big metal catches that you fix to your strap, which cost more. I have seen too many beginners without strap locks and seen guitars drop to the floor. I have actually seen three guitars snap necks because the strap fell off. The cheap ones work, so there is no excuse not to have these. You can also use the red rubber ring that is on the top of bottles of Grolsch Beer (the imported one with the 'pop top'). Put it on the strap pin after you put the strap on. It's not quite as good as a proper strap lock, but has the added bonus of beer!

Justin Recommends: Schaller Strap Locks (around £20/$35) or Jim Dunlop Lok Strap (about £3/$5)

 Metronome
This one is important. You will use your metronome a lot. Any metronome will do, but I recommend getting an electric one, not one of the old 'tick-tock' ones.

These days I use my own Justinguitar Time Trainer Metronome which is an app for iOS and Android. It's cheap as chips and is not only a sample accurate metronome but it's got some awesome training tools to help develop your own 'internal metronome'!! Go check it out, gets great reviews and really will be a big help on your journey.

Of course I'll tell you to use my own branded stuff, but check it out, it's cheap, got amazing reviews and it's as accurate as any other metronome and has awesome training features you won't find anywhere else!

If you still want to stay with a physical metronome, these are reliable, well made and easy to use and have a great feature set. Not the cheapest but often with stuff like this you buy cheap, you buy twice!!

Buy at Amazon.co.uk • Buy at Amazon.com

 Music Stand
A music stand can save your back. If you have any posture problems, get a stand now! Many people sit on the bed or the sofa with sheet music next to them and twist around to see it, craning their neck to look at their fingers. This puts you on a sure-fire track to expensive chiropractic bill. Get a stand - they are not expensive and will make your practice time more comfortable.

I use one called a RAT stand, and it looks super awesome, but they are pretty expensive. If you are a pro or have the money and wanna look cool, then these are the bomb!

Justin Recommends: Some kinda wire music stand!

 Capo
A capo is a really cool device that you place on the guitar neck, and it changes the pitch of the open strings. They are used to change the key of a song, and will enable you to play along with songs that are otherwise very hard. If you sing, they are also useful to change the key of a song quickly to help you find the right key for your singing voice. A very useful (though not 100% necessary) accessory.

* CLASSICAL - please not that if you are using a classical (nylon string) guitar you will need a different capo to the ones shown below, it needs to be flat and not curved. We'll get one in our store soon!

I really like the adjustability of this capo, if you use light strings sometimes the pressure of the Kyser can press the strings out of tune, the spring here means you can adjust the pressure of the capo. Very well made too.

Buy at the justinguitar store

As well as the Tri Action above, I still use a Kyser very often and I've had the same ones for many years! These are reliable, well made and easy to use but not adjustable. Not the cheapest but often with stuff like this you buy cheap, you buy twice!!

Buy at Amazon.co.uk • Buy at Amazon.com •

Display Folder (or ring binder)
It really helps you learn fast if you keep your notes organised. I recommend buying a clear display folder or a ring binder to keep all your notes in and keep them organised. It really will help; it somehow keeps your head tidy if your notes are tidy. They are not expensive, so give it a go.

Justin Recommends: Snowpake Display Folder

Recorder or jam buddy or looper
One of the best things you can do when you are learning is have a jam buddy that learns with you, a friend about the same level that you can practice and learn with. It is also a massive advantage when it comes to learning to improvise because one person can play chords while the other learns to take a solo, and then swap. If you don't have this option I recommend getting a small recorder, so you can record yourself playing and then jam along with that. It is also a very good thing to hear yourself back, so a recorder is a great thing to have even if you have a jam buddy.

Another alternative is to buy a looper pedal, only toward the end of the beginner course - would be another head mess to get into at the start. I've been using the TC Electronic looper called the Ditto (and it's brother the Ditto X2) which as well as being tiny it's very reasonably priced, sounds great and is dead easy to use and is what I'd be recommend for a beginner looking to explore using a looper as a practice tool!

This little beaut packs a lot of punch for it's small size. Very easy to use too so perfect for beginners to have fun with! Not essential for very beginners but will get more useful later in the course! Loads of fun :)

What guitar should you buy?

In this lesson I give you a run down of the different types and what I think you should be looking for as a beginner, and explain the options and reasoning to you. Like with everything else on the course, I want you to understand why, not just follow things blindly!

One of the most frequently asked questions from beginner players is whether to choose electric or acoustic. The advice here is my view. Others may disagree, and they are welcome to their opinion; mine is subject to change without notice!

The Big Beginners Debate

The basic types are

i) Electric (including hollow bodied or semi-acoustics)
ii) Acoustic (steel strings - including those with electrics fitted, so called electro acoustics)
iii) Classical (nylon strings).

Note that ‘semi-acoustics' are not really acoustic, they are electric guitars with a semi-hollow body, and so are sometimes confusingly referred to as semi-acoustics. However, they play like electrics.

Also note that electro-acoustics are not electric guitars. They are acoustic instruments with electronics fitted so that they can be amplified, but you would not normally need to plug them in to get a good sound out of them.

Many people think that electric guitars are going to be loud when they are plugged in... well, they do have a volume control, so you can control the volume. Also, be aware that you do not have to plug them in! I do probably half of my practice on electric guitar without any amp at all. It's good to get the notes ringing out loud and clear without an amp, so as a beginner you might want to put all your money into getting a cool guitar and leave getting an amp until later.

So lets look at the pros and cons of each type of guitar and the factors to consider when choosing between them.

Playability

Electric guitars are generally the easiest to play: the strings are thinner, the ‘action' is low (see below) and therefore they are easier to press down. Barre chords on acoustic guitar can be very demanding and require a lot of finger strength. Cheaper acoustic guitars can be very hard to play higher up the fretboard. Classical guitars have nylon strings, which are softer than steel strings, and easier to press down. However, the neck is much wider on a classical guitar, which can be a struggle for beginners. The action is likely to be higher, as well. In general, they are softer-toned and don't project as well as a steel string acoustic, which makes for quieter practising, which could be a consideration.

Action

The distance from the strings to the neck is called the action. When it is very low it is easy to press the strings down; when it is too low the strings will buzz when you play. If a guitar's action is too high it will be very hard to play, and for a beginner this can be pretty disheartening.

I recommend that you get a guitar with a low action so that it can be played easily. The small tonal benefits of having a higher action can be dealt with in a few years when it becomes important. At the start what is important is enjoying playing!

Getting your guitar action set up by a good luthier can make a huge difference to your guitar's playability (you'll usually find someone at your local store). I have a number of private students that found an AMAZING difference when they had set their guitar up correctly, and of course I get all mine done too. If you are struggling to play barre chords on an acoustic guitar, then a too-high action could certainly be a part of the problem.

Sound and style

Deciding which instrument to start with can be pretty simple if you think in terms of style!

• If you want to play rock, get an electric.

• If you want to play folk or fingerstyle, a steel string acoustic is the best choice.

• If you want to play classical then you need a nylon string classical guitar.

It all depends on what style you want to play. If you like death metal you probably don't want to buy a pink Telecaster... think about what you like and what you are going to play!

If you want to play all styles, then electric might be the way to go and get an acoustic later. My opinion!

Budget Acoustics Usually Suck

Very cheap acoustics are usually not such a great idea. Often their sound quality is poor and they are hard to play. I often see students selling them after a six-month struggle (if they managed to stick with it that long!). So if your budget is very tight, I would not get an acoustic. You may think you save a little because you don't need to buy an amplifier as well, but as I said before you don't have to use an amplifier to practise anyway.

After some internet searches I've found some acoustic packs (with a strap and picks) for less than £100/$175, and you can be pretty sure that these are not going to play well. People just can't make guitars that are easy to play at that price. If that is really your budget, then please spend it on a decent electric (and leave the amp for now).

Do I Really Need An Amplifier?

Electric guitars need an amplifier to be heard above a singing voice, although they make enough sound just for practice instrumentally. There are also a number of units (like the Line 6 Pod and similar) that can be plugged into your stereo, but this isn't much use if you want to play in a band. I did the majority of my practice on an electric guitar without an amplifier, and I think this helps you work on your tone, because you have to draw the volume out of the instrument.

Having a good amp can help you sound like your favorite players, which is cool, but not so important when you are just starting out.

OK, So Which Amplifier?

If you do want an amplifier, there is a vast array of models available with all kinds of fancy stuff built in, effects, digital modelling, even backing tracks! It really depends on your budget. It's very likely that a new amplifier will be your first major purchase if you stick with it (they make a bigger difference to your sound than the guitar does, believe it or not!) so my advice is to start small and simple, learn a bit, see where it is taking you and you will have a better idea of what to spend your hard-earned cash on. There's more about amps in lesson BC-103.

Small Guitars
I often hear from people wondering if they should buy a 3/4 size guitar because their hands are small. Answer is simple. No.

3/4 guitars are fine for children under the age of 11, or as travel guitars, but if you want to learn properly, then buy a full size guitar at the start. I started on a full size classical guitar right back when I was knee high to a grasshopper; initially it's hard, but your fingers adapt fast enough and you will soon develop flexibility and dexterity. For children under 11, a 3/4 guitar is an option, but even then I still feel that full-size is better. Check out all the amazing 6 year-old kids playing amazing stuff on the internet, 9 times out of 10 they are playing full-size instruments.

The verdict on type of guitar:

I think for the general beginner an electric guitar is probably the best instrument, mainly because they are a little easier to play and so you will see results faster, which will inspire you to play more.

Here is my way of thinking about it:

• If you want to play rock: buy an electric.
• If you want to play classical: buy a nylon string classical guitar.
• If you want to play folk: buy a steel string acoustic.
• However, if you only have a very small budget, don't buy an acoustic.
• If you are not really sure, get an electric.
• Avoid a 3/4-size guitar unless it's for very young children.

My "general" recommendation when people ask is get a medium priced electric guitar..

£200/$350 should see you through for a basic electric guitar, a few picks, a strap, a cheap tuner and a cable - if you shop around - and don't be afraid to go second hand! I very rarely buy new instruments.

So which one than?

This is really just about personal choice. Everyone likes different guitars, but here are some of my thoughts on certain brands...

String Steel Acoustic
All my acoustics are made by an Australian company called Maton, and I think they are absolutely wonderful! They do a good range of guitars aiming from mid-price to high-end guitars, but they don't really do any starter priced guitars. If you have the budget for one (they start at around £600/$1000), they are awesome and will last you a long time!

I really don't think you should spend less than about £250 ($400) because you will end up with something hard to play, and you probably won't enjoy playing! At the cheaper end, both Yamaha and Fender make very good budget acoustic guitars. Lately I have played a lot of cheap Yamahas that were good; they are mass-produced, but mass-produced well.

Avoid the thin acoustics that look like electrics. They usually don't sound good either acoustically or plugged in. This includes Fender's ‘Telecoustic' (I otherwise recommend Fender). I'm not really a big fan of any guitars made of anything other than wood either—none of that carbon stuff—just keep it simple.

Don't forget to check the action. If it's too high you will really struggle when it comes to barre chords and power chords later on. Make sure you have a play of it and make sure it feels comfortable for you.

At the higher end I rate Maton, Martin, Taylor and Guild, but once you are spending a couple of thousand, you should know what you want and what you need. Old guitars often sound great and have more character, which is something I don't really understand. Something must happen to the wood as the instrument gets older, as it seems that generally, old guitars sound best.

My favourite adage applies: buy cheap, buy twice. I rate the Yamaha Pacifica guitars (which start around £200/$350). They have a thin neck (which is good for rock) and consistently excellent build quality. I don't think there is much of a question about the quality of these guitars and most of the other teachers I respect recommend them as well. There are many cheaper guitars out there but for the few pounds you will save you are much better off going for a Pacifica in my humble opinion. I never owned one myself (and I don't have any kind of deal going with them at all), but have played many that students bought in over the years, which is why I recommend them to you!

Other good electric starters are the Epiphone SG;

I have also been hearing very good things about the Vintage brand of guitars. I have played a few that belonged to students and they do seem good value.

Also, there are some cheaper Ibanez guitars that sound great. Fender Squires are not bad either, though I've seen some badly set up ones with really cheap fittings, so be careful. Buying a proper USA-built Fender Stratocaster will always be awesome though if you have the budget!

DON'T BUY AN ELECTRIC WITH A FLOATING TREMELO WHEN YOU START OUT.

If you are a beginner then you probably don't know what a ‘floating tremolo' is. Have a look at Floyd Rose, who made the first models. If you are looking at a guitar that has little tuners on the bridge, then it's probably a floating tremolo. For a beginner they are a total pain in the butt. They are very hard to tune and a real pain to change strings. The cheaper ones go out of tune a lot too. If you know why you want one, then fine, but locking tremolos on budget instruments are usually rubbish, so stay clear of those for now!

Classical
I think the Yamaha brand are excellent, and that what I started on! There are many others of course but Yamaha consistently deliver a top notch product at a budget price.

If you are loaded, then just go any try one of the many beautiful handmade guitars available. I personally would like an old Ramirez guitar, but they cost as much as nice cars... maybe one day!

 I've got GAS...
I swear if we all spent as much time practising as we do deciding which guitar to buy there would be a lot more great guitar players in the world. Seriously, dudes and dudettes, when you are starting out, just get yourself a guitar that plays well. If you dig playing guitar and play for a few years you are almost certainly going to want another guitar, even if your first guitar was awesome. It's called G.A.S. (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) and it's a very painful condition for the wallet... I've been suffering for many years so now I'm just used to it!

Buying guitars is fun, and searching for the right one is fun too, but make sure you are actually doing enough practice as well, so you can enjoy your new toy when you get it!

 Use The Forum
On the forum there are thousands of people at all stages of playing that can offer advice on new beginner guitars. I have to admit that I play only top-end gear and don't know the latest on all the new budget guitars, but on the forum there are people learning that can all give you advice based on personal experience, and there's no substitute for that!

There are even boards now for each specific instrument, so it's easy to get the advice you need. They are not solely aimed at beginners, but there is lots of advice from experienced players and I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice here from other GAS sufferers :)
